Bonaire

General information

map-bonaire.jpg

Bonaire is a small Caribbean island, 22 miles by about 5 miles wide, in the southern Caribbean, outside the hurricane belt, 50 miles from the coast of Venezuela. The weather does not vary a great deal, almost always a comfortable 29c (84f) with a pleasant breeze, which lowers humidity and keeps you fresh. Warm and sunny in January or July - "perfect" all year round.

When is a good time to go ?
"Anytime"  is a good time to go!

In 1979 the 13,000 inhabitants of Bonaire voted to protect their environment and resist over-development. Only 5% of Bonaire's land area is developed. Bonaire set aside 25% of the land for conservation schemes. No mass tourism, no theme parks, no high rise hotels, no nightclubs, no traffic lights.

The coast and ocean around Bonaire form the Bonaire Marine Park which is legally protected. Although already a premium dive site, this strict protection of the reef, and perfect climate, make Bonaire one of the finest scuba diving and snorkeling destinations in the world.

The entire island of Klein Bonaire, close to the west coast, is a nature reserve. Bonaire's unspoilt beauty, unpretentious character, diving freedom, perfect weather, commitment to the environment and friendly people, all combine to make a truly exhilarating atmosphere in which you can enjoy your stay.

The ocean is a wonderful 28c (82f) - visibility around 40 metres.  Exceptionally easy ocean conditions make Bonaire a perfect place for learners, inexperienced divers and snorkelers, and it is consistently voted world's number one "beginner's" dive destination. The east coast, the "wild side", has heavier seas with strong currents and larger creatures, a challenge for experienced divers. Bonaire offers a great deal to all capabilities.

* Bonaire Underwater

Bonaire has more fish, and more species of fish, than anywhere else in the Western Atlantic. A fringing reef 25 metres from shore, has more than 355 species of fish, 100 species in less than 5 metres of water. Bonaire has over 80 top-rated sites, 51 high quality shore diving sites. Divers are well catered for on Bonaire. You can dive when and where you like, for as long as you like. Diving freedom is not just a catchy phrase.

Readers of Scuba Diving Magazine rated Bonaire "Top Caribbean Dive Destination" for the third year in a row in addition to Top Marine Life, Top Shore Diving, Top Snorkeling, and Top Destination for Underwater Photography and Top Beginner Diving.

There are other activities if you want to do more than relax or dive. See our brochure for information about sports, nightlife, sightseeing etc. Activities include: world class windsurfing in Lac Bay, kayaking in the mangrove and on the ocean, sailing, kite surfing, fishing, bird watching, cycling ,walking, horse riding and land yachting " blo-karting".

Most accommodation is in studios or apartments on small resorts. We are looking for another word for "resort" as this conjures up large scale holiday complexes. Not so ! There are not crowds on Bonaire, on land or in the ocean. Each "resort" is very small scale. There are no "hotels" as Europeans would know them - and no high-rise. No building above the second floor anywhere on the island ! We also offer a wide range of private houses and villas. We offer more choice of accommodation in the Dutch Caribbean than any other travel company.

There are no special vaccinations required for the Antilles, and no major health issues. Each island has excellent medical facilities, Aruba and Curacao being busier, have larger facilities. There are no visa requirements for the Antilles. Islanders speak excellent English. We have an office on Bonaire for help and support, whi can also arrange excursions and activities.
